Seasons Greetings, Financial Freedom Fighters! Sorry, I know, that was pretty lame. ? Today’s post is a short one though, so please hang with me. : ). In fact, I wasn’t planning on posting this afternoon as I’m working on a longer article to get out in the next couple of days, but I couldn’t resist.
My wife and I (and our two girls) were at Costco this morning, saving a substantial amount of money on groceries as usual. We bought all of our back to school supplies a couple of weeks ago, mostly at Walmart, so it was a food-only shopping list today.
Allow me to set the scene for you. As usual, we rolled our cart through the Costco entrance, flashing our member card in the general direction of the greeter and began to navigate our way towards the back of the store.
My daughter noticed it first. “Hey Dad, they have Christmas trees out!” I looked over to my left. There were a couple of trees on display, with white lights, no other decorations.
“No honey”, I replied, “that must be part of the regular home decor section.”
It’s September 3rd after all, way too early for Christmas displays. I looked to the left. Beside the trees stood an enormous display of Christmas cards. Glancing further down the aisle, boxes of giant ornaments were stacked 6 feet high.
At the far end, boxes of pop up snowmen, complete with LED lights.
Are you kidding me? In my mind, I quickly visualized a calendar….yep, Christmas is almost 4 full months away.
Looking down, I’m wearing a tee shirt, shorts and flip flops. Outside it’s a beautiful day, one likely best spent at the beach.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Christmas, it means a lot to my family and I. But it makes me shake my head to see that consumerism’s reach has stretched all the way back to the late days of summer.
Perhaps this happens regularly now and I have never noticed. It’s sad though, if you ask me.
That’s it for today’s rant, as promised it was a short one! I’d be interested to know if any readers have seen the same thing recently when shopping. Please feel free to comment!
As for my upcoming post, I launched the Mystery Money Man blog a whopping 14 days ago! Even though we’re just getting started, it’s been an incredible experience so far, going back to when I began to plan and build the site in July. I’ve learned so much from others that I’m planning to begin writing some posts for new bloggers, to share some of my experiences in real time.
Stay tuned!
THAT is ludicrous!!!!
I know, heh! Someone (who obviously hadn’t read through the post) commented on Twitter as to whether it was a craft store. I guess I could understand more if it was, but no, it was Costco.
